회사이미지 큰 타격 불구 피해발생전 소비자안전 위해 조치
미국의 한 마켓이 피해가 일어나지 않았지만 오염 가능성만으로 자진해서 식품을 리콜해 눈길을 끌고 있다.
식품 리콜의 경우 회사 이미지 타격으로 인해 매출에 큰 영향을 받지만 소비자 안전과 미국 관련법규에 따라 과감하게 리콜을 한 것.
이는 지난 2010년 대상㈜은 발암물질이 기준치 이상 초과된 ‘유기농 참빛고운 참기름’ 643개(2010년 10월 13일 생산치)를 리콜조치했다가 회사 이미지 하락으로 매출 감소등 큰 곤욕을 치르기도 했듯이 식품 리콜은 부담이 클수 밖에 없다.
지난 22일(현지시간) 트레이더 조(Trader Joe) 마켓은 자진해서 ‘발렌시아 땅콩 크림 버터(Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter)’를 리콜처리했다고 밝혔다.
아직까지 이 제품과 관련한 직접적인 질병이 접수되지 않았지만, 제품이 살모넬라균에 오염됐을 가능성이 발견됐기 때문이다. 이 땅콩크림버터가 인체에 해롭다는 확실한 자료는 없으나, 트레이더 조 마켓은 고객들의 안전과 제품의 질보다 더 중요한 것은 없다고 판단, 리콜조치한 것이다.
발렌시아 땅콩 크림 버터는 전국의 트레이더 조 마켓에서 팔리는 중이었는데, 모든 제품을 회수하기로 했다.
리콜을 하기에 앞서 트레이더 조 마켓은 전 지점에서 제품을 회수했으며, FDA(미국 식품의약국)와 공급회사가 조사를 하는 동안 전 제품의 생산과 판매는 중단됐다고 밝혔다.
제품을 구매한 소비자들에게는 이 제품을 먹지 말라고 공지했고, 트레이더 조 마켓으로 가져오면 전액 환불 처리 해주고 있다.
살모넬라균은 식중독을 일으키는 대표적인 세균이다. 보통사람은 감염 시 보통 고열, 설사, 메스꺼움, 구토, 복통 등을 겪고 3일 이내에 회복이 가능해 치사율이 낮은 것으로 알려져 있지만, 어린 아이들이나 노약자들에게는 치명적이다.
특이한 경우에는 살모넬라균이 혈관으로 침투해 동맥을 감염시키거나 심장 내막염, 관절염 등을 유발하기도 하기도 하므로 주의가 필요하다. <출처 : 미국 식품의약국(FDA)>

September 22, 2012 - Out of the utmost caution and care for our customers, Trader Joe’s is voluntarily recalling its Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter because of potential contamination with Salmonella. At this time, no confirmed illnesses directly linked to this product have been reported to Trader Joe’s.
While we have no confirmed information that suggests this peanut butter is unsafe to eat, there is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our customers and crew, and the quality of our products.
In advance of this recall, Trader Joe’s removed the product from all store shelves.
The recalled Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter was distributed to Trader Joe’s stores nationwide. The product comes in a 16 ounce, plastic jar with an expiration date of stamped below the lid. All code dates are included in this recall.
Production and distribution of the item has been suspended while the FDA and the Valencia Peanut Butter supplier continue their investigations.
Customers who have purchased this item are urged to not eat the product, and to dispose of it or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund. Customers with questions may contact Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at (626) 599-3817.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
