8. The earth is not his brother but his enemy, and when he has conquered it he moves on. He leaves his father's graves behind and he does not care: he kidnaps the earth from his children, he does not care. His fathers' graves and his children birthrights are forgotten. He treats his mother the earth and his brother the sky as things to be bought, plundered, sold like sheep or bright beads. His appetite will devour the earth and leave behind only a desert.

백인에게는 땅이 형제가 아니라 적이므로 정복하면 떠납니다. 아버지의 무덤을 내팽개치고, 아들의 땅을 빼앗아 가면서도 태연합니다. 아버지의 무덤과 하늘이 준 아들의 권리가 사라집니다. 자신의 어머니이고 형제이기도한 땅과 하늘을, 매매와 약탈의 대상인 가축과 푸른 구슬쯤으로 취급합니다. 백인이 탐욕스럽게 땅을 먹어치우니 남는 것은 황무지입니다.

☞ treat A as B A를 B로 취급하다/his mother = the earth, his brother = the sky 동격/His appetite will devour the earth and leave behind only a desert.

우리말은 사물이나 추상명사가 주어로 오는 것을 꺼려합니다. 주어를 부사어로 대치하고 문맥에 맞는 주어를 찾아서 번역하는 것이 자연스런 해석의 요령입니다.

9. I do not know; our ways are different from your ways. The sight of your cities pains the eyes of the redman, but perhaps it is because the red is a savage and does not understand. There is no quiet place in the whiteman's cities- no place to hear the unfurling of leaves in spring or the rustle of insects' wings. But perhaps it is because I am a savage and do not understand. The clatter only seems to insult the ears. And what is there to life if a man cannot hear the lonely cry of the whippoorwill, or the arguments of the frogs round the pond at night? I am a red man and do not understand. 

나는 잘 모르지만 우리의 방식은 그대들의 방식과 다릅니다. 백인의 도시를 보고 눈이 아픈 것은 우리가 야만인이고 이해를 못해서겠지요. 백인의 도시에 고요는 없어서 싹이 돋는 봄의 소리와 삭삭거리는 곤충의 날갯짓 소리를 들을 길이 없습니다. 이것도 내가 야만인이고 무지하기 때문이겠지요. 삐거덕 거리는 소리는 귀에 거슬리기만 할 뿐입니다. 쏙독새의 외로운 울음을 듣지 못하고 한밤 연못에서 경쟁하듯 울어대는 개구리 소리를 듣지 못한다면 인간의 삶에는 무엇이 있을까요? 나는 인디언이어서 알지 못하겠습니다.

☞ rustle (잎이나 종이 따위가 움직이면서 내는 '삭삭소리’) 영어의 명사나 동사에는 우리말의 의성어나 의태어가 단어 안에 포함되어 있으므로 영어 문장에 보이지 않는 의성어나 의태어를 살려서 번역하는 것이 원문에 충실한 번역이 됩니다.

10. The Indian prefers the soft sound of the wind darting over the face of a pond, and the smell of the wind itself, cleansed by a midday rain or scented by the pinyon pine. The air is precious to the redman, for all things share the same breath. The beast, the tree, the man they all share the same breath. The whiteman does not seem to notice the air he breathes: like a man dying for many days he is numb to the stench. 

인디언은 연못을 스치는 부드러운 바람소리와 한낮의 소나기에 씻긴, 솔 내 품은 바람 냄새를 좋아합니다. 바람이 인디언에게 소중한 이유는 만물이 함께 쉬는 숨이기 때문입니다. 짐승과 나무 그리고 사람이 쉬는 숨은 모두 같습니다. 백인은 스스로 내쉬는 숨도 모르는 듯합니다. 마치 천천히 죽어가는 사람이 썩은 냄새를 맡지 못하듯이.

☞ the wind darting over the face of a pond 연못의 표면위를 쏜살같이 넘어가다 / the smell of the wind itself, (which is) cleansed by a midday rain or (which is) scented by the pinyon pine. 비에 씻긴 또는 솔나무에 의해 냄새가 풍겨 나온 바람자체의 냄새.

11. But if we sell you our land, you must remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports. The wind that gave our grand father his first breath also receives his last sigh. The wind must also give our children the spirit of life. And if we sell you our land, you must keep it apart and sacred as a place where even the white man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow's flowers.

그래도 우리가 땅을 판다면, 그대들이 반드시 기억해야 할 것은 바람은 우리에게 한없이 소중하며 스스로 숨을 불어넣은 모든 생명에게 자신의 정기도 나눈다는 사실입니다. 바람은 우리 선조에게 첫 숨을 불어넣었지만 마지막 숨도 거둡니다. 바람은 우리 아이들에게도 생명의 정수를 줍니다. 우리가 땅을 판다면 백인들도 초원의 꽃들로 달콤해진 바람의 맛을 음미할 수 있도록 성스럽게 잘 간수해야 합니다.
